Thank you for visiting the Official Web site of the Long Island TechFest. Hope you can spend a few minutes. This homepage is designed to explain the show and answer the basic questions. Additional details are found on our other pages. This Web site will be updated daily from now until the show.

WHAT IS TECHFEST?
Techfest is a festival.  It is a celebration of all forms of science,
technology and innovation.  It is an event for everybody.

WHAT WILL I SEE AT TECHFEST?
You'll see the latest technology of the present, get a significant glimpse into the future and kids will enjoy a look back at the past - 300 million years into the past - with our truly amazing hands-on Dinosaurs Rock exhibit.  You'll meet robots, talk to scientists around the world, and experience the magic of virtual reality.  You'll say hi to Sico - he's no ordinary robot - he's actually got his own American Express card and a membership in the Screen Actor's Guild! Your child will absolutely love Virsual the digital rocking horse - this is the ultimate kids' toy if there ever was one. Perhaps you'll get to play Mindball - a game where you actually use brain waves to move objects.  Learn about the latest in renewable energy, from hybrid cars and compressed natural gas vehicles to wind farms, fuel cells, and solar cookers. Meet Long Island companies that spend every day protecting our environment and making strides toward curing diseases.   Meet some of our most amazing students - our next wave of leaders - and see the amazing science projects they created that won them national acclaim. Enjoy seminars and learn how to really protect against computer viruses, how to avoid the perils of household mold, and even how to raise capital for a start-up venture.  There's a lot more of course, so for additional info, keep reading.

WILL THERE BE ENTERTAINMENT?

Yessiree and you bet! This is a festival - I know we said that already, but it's worth repeating.  Because at TechFest, all the interesting exhibits and all the toys and games, and all the speeches and panel discussions - all take place in a beautiful public park.  We think that this just might be the first science and tech event of its kind ever to be presented in this manner. There is live music the entire weekend, and we've got some great bands - including the Wild Magnolias from New Orleans. We've got shady places to hang out and sit, and one of our solar exhibitors even has this stuff that we'll put on the top of a tent and it reflects all sunlight, which makes it a cool station. We've got lots of food and beverage, cool hi-tech demo's, some pretty interesting surprises, family and kids entertainment, contests and prizes, and even goodie bags. Sure - science and technology is meant to be educational and enlightening, and it will be; but first and foremost - Techfest is meant to be fun.

WILL THERE BE STUFF FOR KIDS?
Absolutely and of course! For younger kids, we've got things for them to jump on and the food they most like to get all over themselves. But get this - we've got a giant hands-on paleontology exhibit - over 3,000 square feet - where kids will marvel at dinosaur skeletons, and actually get to see and touch real dinosaur eggs, real meteorites, and dig for real fossils. Older kids will love our collective of digital artists who use new technologies to create playful interactive spectacles, and we've got one inventor - he's very cool but a little offbeat - and he's built one contraption that lets you draw a picture with your heartbeat, and another one called Monkey On Your Back that we're not even going to try to explain. For young adults still in school - high school thru grad school - , the Long Island Works Coalition will accept digital resumes on site, and they have a database of some fabulous internships that are available soon.

SO HOW AND WHY ARE YOU DOING ALL THIS IN EISENHOWER PARK? Here's How: TechFest is bringing in large tented structures, small tented structures, stages, podiums, lights, sound, electric, internet, umbrella tables, chairs, food and beverage, and whatever else is necessary.  Here' Why: So that this could occur in a park instead of a convention center, so that we can do this with sunlight instead of flourescent lights, and so that you could choose to make a family day of it, or to check it out in the evening when the sun goes down, which will be a beautiful sight to behold.  See you at Eisenhower Park this coming weekend!

LETTER FROM THE COUNTY EXECUTIVE

Dear Friend,

I am pleased to introduce you to Long Island TechFest - an exciting new community event. TechFest is a new way of looking at a tech event. Instead of taking place in a convention center under fluorescent lights, TechFest takes place in a beautiful public park, with live entertainment.

Techfest is a celebration that features some of Long Island's most innovative businesses. In recent years Long Island biotech firms have made dramatic inroads in searching for cures for many well-known diseases. Long Island engineering and research firms have achieved significant results in the battle to decrease our reliance on fossil fuels. Long Island firms are mapping the future of transportation and communication. Our think tanks develop new theories, our incubators perform research, and our businesses secure patents. We do this every day.

Techfest is also a celebration of our talented youth. Our High School seniors received 83 out of 300 semi-finalist slots in the recent Intel science search competition, despite participation of 1,600 high Schools nationwide. Those are astounding numbers. You'll get to meet some of those winning students and their families at TechFest.

Join us for Techfest - a special weekend at beautiful Eisenhower Park - it really will be fascinating, futuristic, and fun.

Sincerely,

Thomas R. Suozzi
Nassau County Executive
