MEET THE PROMISING YOUNG SCIENTISTS OF THE FUTURE TechFest is thrilled to present finalists of the most recent Intel Science Talent Search, and the Intel Int'l Science and Engineering Fair. Along with a dozen finalists, TechFest presents Science Service, the administrators of both programs, who will regale you with tales of the amazing scientific prowess of Long Island youth. Consider for a moment that 1600 high schools compete nationwide, and yet Long Island alone produced 83 out of 300 semifinalists of ISTS in 2005. Those are staggering numbers! This competition is the real deal - it has produced countless top scientists, captains of industry, and even 6 Nobel Prize Winners. Needless to say, this is a great opportunity for us to publicly congratulate our top talent, and it is the first time they have been assembled together in a public event in their home towns, so if their parents are beaming a bit - can you blame them? On Friday evening, we are proud to feature David Bauer - the 2005 winner from the Bronx (close enough to Long Island) as a keynote speaker, and David will return on Saturday afternoon. David developed a sensor for detecting an individual' s exposure to biochemical agents. He won a $100,000 scholarship as national first prize. Karen Geringer is from Massapequa, and she researched public attitudes on terrorism and their impact upon efforts to institute preventive measures. Another finalist researched acid gels as an ideal means for replicating human tissue in a lab - ideal for aiding burn victims; another studied enzymes responsible for the evolution of yams as an affordable staple crop; another researched efficient and cost-effective approaches to marine pollution abatement; and another performed evolutionary studies on Hawaiian Island fruit flies, deciphering the meaning of their wing melanin spots, and their courtship behaviors. www.sciserv.org/isef/ |

WIND POWER FROM LIPA - The Long Island Power Authority has invested heavily in wind farm technology. At TechFest, they will feature information on their wind projects, and they will have a demo windmill, a fuel cell demo, a light meter, and more. It's a sure sign that a municipality is progressive when its public utilities are forward-thinking. (Editor's Note: We at TechFest have an office in post-Enron Los Angeles, and we still have power surges, blackouts, and other nonsense on a regular basis. And we never get any rebates, either.)
